About fifteen years ago, woodturners were trying their hand at carving their pieces. I was no exception. I made two such pieces. This is one of them. While challenging and somewhat satisfying I felt that this was not the direction I wish to go so on completion of this piece I changed my focus and moved away from the carving aspect of wood turning.
The wood in this vase is staghorn sumac, which many people consider a weed. However when harvested and dried it makes stunning pieces which reflect light in various colours depending on the source. My supply of this wood comes from those people who are trying to eradicate it from their lawns.
