I usually make more than one piece for a commission and this was one of three vases left after the client chose one.
I was fortunate when making these pieces as there is usually a high possibility of failure. Red pine, when dead, usually has a blue stain in the wood. In the branches this stain can reach right to the core. When I first started making these 'stick vases' I was working with spalted maple branches. They were busy yet beautiful. This led me to a 'What if" moment and I decided to apply this knowledge to other woods. lilac and red pine were obvious choices.
I have made a number of vases in red pine but none quite as stunning as the four vases made in response to this commission.
