Large Woodfired Vase with Glass Run

Additional Information

Unpredictable – that is what it is like to woodfire. You never know what a pot is going to be like until the kiln cools and you can take everything out. Then you get to see how the flames and ash of the kiln have decorated each pot. The potter is not the sole creator – the kiln is the co-creator.

Extreme heat melts wood ash onto the surface of each vessel – revealing the path of the flame from firebox to chimney. Wad marks, that were used to separate stacked pots, still show on each pot – sometimes as dots with flashing around them or as embedded sea shells.

These pots explicitly tell the process of their creation that you can learn to read – much like the rocks on the Georgian Bay.
