True to the Heart

Additional Information

Mixed media: Pencil, homemade lichen inks from various lichens

Native cultures used lichen as a dye. The people lived in deep connection with the Self and accepted life in its entirety.

Pain is a part of the human journey.
It guides us to the deepest inquiry about our existence. And that is how pain can be beautiful.

The portrait is inspired by a photograph from Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Texas.
The back of the photograph states:
‘Curley was a Crow Indian, and the only survivor of the Custer massacre (1876).’
