Around Champlain

Additional Information

A kayak ready on the dock, a doggo in a lifejacket eagerly waiting, a snack and my map, and we are ready for an afternoon paddle! This piece depicts a kayak around Champlain Monument Island on a perfect Pointe au Baril day, with a blue sky and a gentle wind, just enough to keep the bugs away, and the peace that comes from moving slowly on the water.
Part of a series that explores place through personal mapping, it is an examination of my connection to this land, my experience and history in this place. Part obsessive route planning, part dreaming of travelling the waterways of Pointe au Baril, these works sit in tension with themselves. Just as my presence in this place affects the ecosystems that make it so special, so to, the birchbark resists itself and the thread holding it together, stable yet fragile.
Embroidery and waxed thread on birch bark. Framed in a 10” x 10” x 2” shadow box with glass.
