An Old Friend

Additional Information

Family gatherings at Friend Island are part of the fabric of summer in Pointe au Baril. We have had celebrations, commemorations, and many picnics here over the years. It is a place we all return to, a place to come together, and a place where memories are made.
Part of a series that explores place through personal mapping, it is an examination of my connection to this land, my experience and history in this place. Part obsessive route planning, part dreaming of travelling the waterways of Pointe au Baril, these works sit in tension with themselves. Just as my presence in this place affects the ecosystems that make it so special, so to, the birchbark resists itself and the thread holding it together, stable yet fragile.
Embroidery and waxed thread on birch bark. Framed in a 10” x 10” x 2” shadow box with glass.
