I am a self-taught wood turner and have been creating pieces in my studio for the last 30+ years. For the last several years I have been working in a studio that has been specifically designed for wood turning. This venue has allowed me to work on some of the most innovative pieces I have ever made.
When I first started turning full time I was making chargers out of old dock cedar. These became very popular and remain a staple part of my production to this day. Wood turners and salad bowls seem to go hand in hand and I was no exception. Salad bowls are my bread and butter.
I have always felt that my job is to allow the wood to show its true beauty. If I have practiced my skill well enough, the “WOW” factor comes from the magnificence of the characteristics of the wood. Epoxy permits me to show wood in a way that is not possible using more traditional means and formats. I have been able to take woods that were destined for the firewood pile or worse, to the compost heap, and make them into stunning, yet functional, works of art.
