Cathy Ballantyne: Hunter-Gatherer of Wool
I grew up with my toes in Georgian Bay’s summer waters and my skate blades cutting its icy inlets in the winter. Today I live and create just south of Parry Sound on Otter Lake where I have been making and selling functional felted pieces since 2014.
My felting has been sold through the Algonquin Park Gallery Shop and the Art Gallery of Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie. My pieces have found their place in homes across Canada and the US.
Each piece is hand knit using 100% new wool. Then it is felted to become a woolen “canvas”: ready to be dyed, needle-felted, beaded and/or embroidered. Some pieces get a hand shaped leather lid to hide whatever treasures might go inside.
While decorative, each unique piece is intended to be gently used. Because I begin by knitting the shape into each piece, most can be washed carefully by hand and reshaped, just as you might your fine woolen sweaters.
They provide a safe spot for eye-wear, keys, electronic gadgets or jewellery. They can consolidate collections and protect your furniture from scratches, drips and hot dishes.
